What happens during the luteal phase?
After ovulation, the female organism waits for a possible pregnancy. During this phase, the corpus luteum, the structure that resides in the ovaries and is responsible for supporting the egg, begins to produce progesterone. This hormone thickens the bottom of the uterus so that the fertilized egg can be properly implanted.
If no egg can settle on the uterine floor, the body stops producing progesterone between 11 and 17 days. Then the built-up liner is expelled from the body during menstruation.
Why is it important to consider the luteal phase when conceiving?
