Let’s face it: dark lips are all the rage and we can’t get enough of them. Although this new version of the Gothic classic is a bit more romantic, it’s still a beautiful look with impact, which means you want to keep the look-down look so everything goes well.
When it comes to tips and tricks for this beautiful lip look, we have joined Sarah Lucero, Celebrity Makeup Artist and Global Creative Director for Stila Cosmetics, as one of our favorite lip mavens. She created a flawless version of this lip backstage last season’s fashion week, and we wanted to share her tips on how to get the same gorgeous look.
Nevertheless: “There are many great lip scrubs like Fresh Sugar Lip Polish. If you feel like you have really flaky lips, I would try to exfoliate them gently. However, if this doesn’t work the day you want to rock your dark lip, then that’s fine: use a glossy dark lip color. It will hide some of that flakiness. ”
De-fuzz your upper lip: “You should also make sure there is no hair on your upper lip. You have no idea what attention – and what false attention – this dark shadow brings to your mouth. Even if the lip color catches one of those tiny, tiny hairs? Forget it, the look is just not good. They look like floating points. So wrong. ”
Start with a good basic knowledge: “The best way to prepare your lips for wearing a dark color is to keep them in good shape, which means they stay hydrated. An excellent lip balm is important, but try to get one that isn’t too shiny. If you use it as a base under the lip color, the color will translucent or slip over the lip line. Balsam These are more dull, like Burts Bees Lip Balm. I often use this to prepare the lip for dark color. The matt surface is perfect. ”
Go for glowing skin: “You also have to spend a minute to perfect your skin, which many people often forget. If your dark lips compete for spots or redness in your chin or nose, it just doesn’t look fresh. Look for a good BB or CC cream (I used a lot of Stila CC sunscreen 20 color correction cream backstage) or a tinted moisturizer that gives you a smooth, even complexion. This highlights the dark lip as bolder, cleaner and more effective.
Find your best dark lip color: “I love this type of Merlot / Cabernet, more purple based on medium to medium skin; it gives you a classic, vampy renaissance look (I used Stila Stay All Day Vinyl Gloss in Merlot behind the scenes at alice + olivia.) If your skin is more olive, then you should rather use a mahogany / terracotta pad the color, like a deep burgundy. If you have very deep skin, I love the Merlot color, but I tend to mix a very small amount of black or brown from our smudge pots to achieve the depth of color and effect when I’m behind the makeup Make up. This is incredible for women with deep skin tones because their lips are rather dark. If you just add a little black or dark brown, you get a deeper look that helps women glow. Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Brigitte is more of a color balm that is mixed with brown or black eyeliner and gives women with deep skin tones a wonderful, perfect lip color. ”
Line or not line? “If it is a vinyl lip with a high gloss, it is not too glossy or creamy and therefore remains even without a liner. However, if you feel more comfortable with the idea of a lined lip, maybe I would take a lip brush and then perfect the look around the lip by just using the product itself, or you will get a wine or blood red lipstick and perfect the lip . I think it’s good to have one, but it doesn’t depend too much on the lip liner. The key is that if you’re using a matte color, you can use the pen to smooth and perfect the look, but if it’s glossy, you’ll want to apply the liner first to give the lip color hold and definition. ”
Bonus round: how to apply lip liner properly! “Get a natural lipstick that mimics your natural lip tone. Sharpen the pencil and apply the pencil side to the lip with the tip facing up. When you use the side of the pen to sketch in the hue, you get a wider line that looks more natural. Use shorter, sketched lines instead of a hard line. You don’t have to line your entire mouth either; You can only use the corners of your mouth to improve your natural lip line. The goal is to reshape the mouth and support the lipstick. “
